How to disable Sendmail on VPS servers

To disable the inbound mail server so that no outside servers can connect on the SMTP ports do the following:

Primary Method

Edit the /etc/sysconfig/sendmail file and set DAEMON=no in place of yes.  This will stop port 25 from listening.

Secondary Method

FreeBSD v2 & v3

Modify /etc/rc.conf by adding this line:

sendmail_enable="NO"

Linux

Modify the /etc/mail/sendmail.mc file.

Change:

DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,')dnl

to:

DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp, Addr=127.0.0.1,')dnl

Also change:
DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=submission,, M=Ea')dnl

to:
DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=submission, Addr=127.0.0.1,, M=Ea')dn
